Journey of AIRLAB

Our History

Foundation of AIRLAB

The Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory was established at the University of Lagos with a vision to foster cutting-edge AI and robotics research in Africa.

Robot-Soccer Competition, Ethiopia

Our team represented Nigeria in a robot-soccer competition held in Ethiopia between 29th June – 5th July 2018 with our team emerging in 4th place. This is a yearly event and our team learned a lot. The application of such a competition has certain positive aftermath in education, and this motivated us in organizing the first of its kind ‘UNILAG Robotics & AI competition’ (12th December 2018) as a prelude to an up-scaled, nationwide Robotics & AI competition for tertiary institutions.

Workshops on Robotics

Workshops on robotics were organized by AIRLAB to prepare the students for the forthcoming competition. The maiden edition was held on 20th October 2018 at UNILAG. These workshops introduced participants to quick starts on robotics projects, working with microcontrollers and creating software for robotics projects amongst many other related topics. The workshop was attended by undergraduate students of UNILAG.

UNILAG Robotics Competition

The maiden edition of the UNILAG robotics competition took place on the 12th of December, 2018. The competition was well attended by students, the staff of UNILAG and interest groups from the industry.

Pan-Africa Robotics Competition (Ghana)

Themed 'Solvable challenges: The making of the African Smart City'. Three of our students competed in the making of African smart cities in July 2019 held in Central University Ghana.

First Lego Robotics Training

AIRLAB collaborated with Coderina Education and the Technology Foundation to organize free training on FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) Robotics for (6-10) High School students and (4) UNILAG undergraduate students (mentors/coaches)

UNILAG Tour Guide App Development

A mobile application was proposed by the Vice-Chancellor to direct new students and visitors to navigate around the campus without hassles. This app was developed by the team from AIRLAB.

Code the Curve Competition

Organised in partnership with IBM and SAP, the CodeTheCurve Hackathon calls young developers and innovators to use their digital skills, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to join forces to inspire and develop digital solutions to current and future pandemia-challenges. With nearly 200 applications received from scores of countries worldwide. Our team were one of the top forty winner selected around the world.

FLL Robotics - CITY SHAPER

A team of high school students trained in the lab for coding in 2019 were later trained on robotics to represent AIRol UNILAG at the 2020 FLL competition in Abuja. The competition took place in February 2020. The team came home as a winner in CORE VALUE category out of 40 teams represented in the competition.

FLL Robotics Competition - REPLAY

An All-girls team of high school students trained at our lab were trained to represent AIRLAB UNILAG at the 2021 FLL competition in Abuja. Our team came 3rd best out of 132 teams, winner of the CORE VALUE category, 1st position in Robot design, and 3rd position in Robot performance.

Championship Competition (Greece)

Our team (airol) competed internationally at Greece on the 24th - 27th of June.

Summer Coding and Robotics Training

UNILAG CSR sponsored by FunmiAyinke Humanitarian Foundation, happened during the long vacation of schools in Lagos. There were two set of classes, one set was for 8-12 years and the other set for 13-17years.

National Robotics Competition

Our Teens Robotics team (Team ConTech) took the 3rd Position at the First Tech Challenge (FTC 2022), a national robotics competition held at Baze University, Abuja.

Free Summer AI and Robotic Program

We hosted a one-month summer programme that trained participants between the ages of 8 and 16 in the basics of coding and robotics. It also exposed the young participants to software applications which they deployed in the creation of different projects.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)

Our Kids and Teem Arm won big at the FIRST Robotics Competition held between Monday, February 13 and Tuesday, February 14, 2023 in Lagos and Abuja. The Competition featured various challenges including First Lego League (FLL) for kids between ages 8 and 12 years and First Tech Challenge (FTC) for teenagers between ages 13 and 16 years.

AI Bootcamp (EduAI Hub) X AIRLAB

The 4-day bootcamp which began on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 provided a platform for the training of 25 high school students – 15 females and 10 males – selected from over 200 applicants across Lagos state.
